“Thinking from first principles” in a young domain is just doing the obvious thing. In a mature domain, the same obvious thing masquerades as an insane course of action because norms tend to outlive the constraints they were derived from.

Luckily mature domains get reset by technological development, cultural shifts, literal humans ageing to retirement, and so on. The trick is timing the convergence of the reset with the right people and the right incentives.
